One piece, three outfits
How to style a trench coat: 3 outfits for office, weekend and evening
A trench is the coat for the British in-between: too warm for a jacket day, not cold enough for wool. Here is how to wear the same one three ways without it turning into a uniform.
The classic trench is double breasted and belted, in a stone or honey shade that sits between beige and khaki. That neutral is why it goes with almost everything, and also why it can look flat. The fix is contrast: a darker layer underneath, a crisp white, or a texture such as knit or denim.
Fit matters more than the label. The shoulder seam should sit on your shoulder, you should be able to cross your arms with a jumper underneath, and the hem usually looks best just below the knee. If you are petite, a shorter trench that ends at or above the knee keeps the proportions right.
Three outfits, one trench coat
Office
Tailored and tonal
- Stone trench coat
- Navy fine knit jumper
- Straight navy or charcoal trousers
- Brown leather loafers
- Structured tote
Wear the trench open over navy tailoring. Navy and stone is a quieter pairing than black and stone, softer near the face and easier to repeat through the week. A fine merino jumper rather than a shirt means no collar fighting with the lapels.
Tip: If your office is formal, swap the jumper for a white shirt and add a slim belt in the same brown as the loafers.
Weekend
Denim and trainers
- Trench coat
- Breton striped top
- Straight leg jeans in mid blue
- White leather trainers
- Crossbody bag
This is the trench at its most relaxed, and it works because every piece is a classic in its own right. Turn the sleeves back once so the stripe shows at the cuff. Tie the belt in a loose knot at the front instead of buckling it: it gives the waist some shape without looking formal.
Tip: On a cold morning add a grey crew neck over the Breton and let the stripes show at the hem.
Evening
Black underneath
- Trench coat
- Black slip skirt or black wide trousers
- Black fine knit or silk camisole
- Block heel ankle boots
- Gold earrings
For dinner, put all black under the trench. The coat becomes the only colour in the outfit, which looks deliberate and polished. Close it and tie the belt at the waist, then push the sleeves up slightly to show the wrists. A block heel copes with wet pavements far better than a stiletto.
Tip: One touch of colour is enough here: a rust scarf or a berry lipstick, not both.
Colours that work with a stone trench
Navy, black, white, chocolate brown and denim blue are the easy partners. For colour, go warm and muted: rust, olive, burgundy and camel all sit well against stone. Pastels can look washed out next to beige unless something darker in the outfit anchors them.
Shoes
- Loafers for the office, with fine socks when it is cold.
- White leather trainers for weekends, kept clean so they look intentional.
- Block heel ankle boots for evenings and rain.
- Knee boots with a skirt in autumn: the hem of the trench should cover the top of the boot.
Layering for the British weather
A trench is not warm on its own, which is exactly why it suits March, April, September and October. Layer underneath rather than switching coats: a fine knit for mild days, a thicker jumper or a thin padded gilet when the temperature drops. Check the sleeves have room for it before you buy. Most trenches are shower resistant rather than waterproof, so in a proper downpour you still want an umbrella.
Mistakes to avoid
- Leaving the coat open with the belt buckled in front: the ends dangle and catch on everything. Tie it behind you instead.
- Beige from head to toe under a beige trench, which can drain colour from the face. Put something darker or a white collar near the face.
- A trench too long for your height, so it swamps you. The hem should not land on the widest part of the calf.
- Sizing up a long way to fit a thick jumper: the shoulders drop and the coat looks borrowed.
Questions
What should I wear under a trench coat?
Anything with a clean line: a fine knit, a shirt, a Breton top or a simple dress. Save chunky textures for cold days and make sure the sleeves underneath are not bulkier than the coat's.
Can I wear a trench coat in winter in the UK?
On mild winter days, yes, with a warm jumper or a thin padded layer underneath. For freezing days a wool coat is warmer. The trench is at its best in spring and autumn.
Should a trench coat be worn belted or open?
Both work. Open looks easy and lengthens the body, belted gives shape for evenings. If you wear it open, tie the belt behind you so it does not hang loose.
Which shoes go with a trench coat?
Loafers, white trainers, ankle boots and knee boots are the most reliable. Very chunky walking boots tend to fight with the coat's tailoring.
